SCCM 2012 OSD Gotcha

By | October 16, 2015

When deploying operating systems using SCCM 2012 you may find that your operating system has been deployed to any drive but the C: drive. This can be very frustrating when you have sat there for an hour waiting for your build to be deployed only to find the operating system has been deployed to wrong drive letter.
The cause of this is an OSD variable called OSDPreserveDriveLetter. By default this variable is set to false which causes the Windows partition to be assigned the same drive letter that was assigned to the OS partition whilst in WinPE. If you set this to True or disable the step altogether the image is deployed to the C: drive assuming the reference image was captured from the C: drive of your reference machine.

More information about this variable and other variables can be found here, this link also offers a good explanation around this variable.
